We are returning a car in Paris, driving the last leg of our auto trip from Avignon. We'd prefer to avoid driving in city traffic in Paris. Are there better choices for returning a car?
I think I would drop the car off at Orly if your rental agency is there. Do you have a GPS? .We always get our car at Orly , put down a marker so that when we come back it is easier. I would not drive in Paris, but the drive to Orly is not too bad... but a lot easier if you have a GPS. We always take a cab from Orly into the city.
Driving in Paris isn't that bad. Parking on the street is what's become a pain in the tail.
If you drop at Orly, you have the luggage-moving issue from lot to transportation, then transportation to hotel.
It would be easier (and more efficient time-wise) to drive into town, check in and dump luggage at hotel, drop off car, and press on with plans.
This idea really stinks if you're unfamiliar with the city and it's after dark, however.
Diane, you don't mention where you are staying in Paris or which rental agency you are using. A couple of years ago we picked up a car from an Avis location a five-minute walk from our hotel in the Rue Cler area. We mapped out a very easy route to the freeway from there, and it was one of the easiest rental experiences we've ever had.
Auto Europe's Porte d'Orleans drop off point is at 17 Boulevard Romain Rolland which parallels the Peripherique ring road on the south side of Paris. It's only a few blocks from the Porte d'Orleans Metro station which is at the end of the line for line 4. Drive to the Metro station and drop off your bags, plus everyone except the driver. The driver can then drop off the car and walk back to the Metro station without having to schlepp any bags.
