early January in Italy

Any suggestions for Italy in January, flying in and out of Rome (that's what we could get using FF miles)? Husband & son have 9 days and would like to visit areas other than Rome. Ok with trains/buses or renting a car. Hubbie would like warmer area---is anywhere warm in January? Possible to do Rome, Seinna, and Amalfi coast? Will be there on Epiphany, so any "don't miss" kind of things? First trip to Italy! Wish I was going too, but this time I'm just the planner.

For warmer, head south. In November/December, Rome was about mid-50s to low 60s, and I expect January would be similar. Florence was noticably colder, than Rome, which means Siena would be colder as well.

I would skip Siena this time. Could probably spend a good 4-5 days in Rome and then devote the other half of the trip to the Amalfi Coast region.
