I am preparing to book a flight from London to Berlin and the flights I'm interested in all leave around 6:30 am. About four years ago, I did sleep in Gatwick for an early flight, but not sure I want to do that again. My question is what time would I need to check-in for a 6:30 flight...would 5:30 be too late? I see that Easybus could get me there in time. Also, there are flights from Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted...any opinions on the best airport to get to. Finally, Ryanair has the cheapest fares, but seems to tack on a lot of fees...Easyjet is the one I'm leaning toward...any opinions? Thanks.
Easyjet recommends checking in AT LEAST 2 hours before flight time, and they close their check-in desk 40 minutes before departure...no ifs, ands, or buts. An hour beforehand is probably cutting it too close.
Personally, I prefer Gatwick. The Gatwick Express train leaves London Victoria station for the airport...the first is at 3:30 am...then another at 4:30, with runs on the quarter hour after that. It's a bit expensive, at about 15 pounds one way, but it's only a half hour run, and there's no traffic jams. You can book a ticket thru the easyjet website.
Besides price, fees, and transportation to the airport, also check baggage policies and restrictions when comparing airlines. For any weight overages, you'll pay an arm and a leg, so the one with the highest luggage allowances may win out, even if it's slightly more expensive.
I can't speak to the airlines, but the last time I had a flight in the WEE hours out of Gatwick I wound up staying at Marriott nearby for 40 Pounds... Check the online deals, it might be worth taking a late train to the airport and staying at a cheaper hotel there.
