Düsseldorf to Rome - quickest way to travel?

I am trying to help a friend who is going to Düsseldorf in May for a niece's graduation. My friend would like to go to Rome to tour the Vatican museum. Should she fly? It looks to me like the distance between the two cities is great enough that flying is the best option. Should she fly from Frankfurt?
She lives in Atlanta so should she fly to Frankfurt, then train to Düsseldorf, and, from there, train to Frankfurt, and, then fly to Rome?
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Düsseldorf airport itself is pretty well served. According to the airport website both Air Berlin and Alitalia fly to Rome.

Hi Judy,

Take a look at flying into Düsseldorf and home from Rome. Then you can buy a one-way from Düsseldorf to Rome on a separate reservation. You can also look at combining the whole reservation into one and see what works out the best.

Sites like flights.google.com, kayak.com and rome2rio.com/skyscanner.com can help with comparing options.

I did a quick search and see just under $1500 on Delta for Atlanta - Dusseldorf, Rome - Atlanta, all non-stop. Then a one-way Dusseldorf-Rome is less than $100.

Good luck!

If you're looking for cheaper flights from Düsseldorf to Rome, be warned that some budget flights are from the so-called "Düsseldorf-Weeze" airport, which is a much longer distance away from the city, almost to the Dutch border.
