Anyone have any advice about driving through Switerland to Italy at the end of December? Is this a bad idea.

There's no guarantee that you won't get caught in winter storm, but once the snowfall ends, the highways in Switzerland are usually cleared pretty quickly. All those tunnels through the mountains and hill sides make it a bit easier too. Snow chains for your tires would be a good idea to pack.
