Driving south from CDG airport in Paris

We will be flying into CDG/Paris in May. We plan to rent a car for 2 and a half weeks, skip Paris and travel through Loire, Dordogne, Provence, and back up through Burgundy, departing again from CDG. I have heard that driving out of Paris from CDG can be harrowing for a flight-weary, first time driver in France. Should we pick up/return our car at CDG, or take the train from Paris to a town further south such as Tours and rent the car there? Many thanks.

We returned our rental car to CDG and it was not a problem but that is only because we had a GPS which is one of the best things we ever spent money on. If you have a GPS it is no problem. If you have never used one I recommend you get familar with it before you use it over there.

Tours is only about three hours from Roissy. That's about as long a I prefer driving the first day. You'll be hyped up and, assuming an early morning arrival, the peripherique traffic will probably have died down by the time you get going. A gps will help, but the essence of getting around Paris is knowing that you'll pick up the E15 coming out of the airport and stick with it until you're almost to Orly. From then on, you'll have time to fiddle with a map.
