driving Neuschwanstein to Cinque Terre

We are driving from King Ludwig's castle in Hohenschwangau to Riamaggiore in Cinque Terre on Easter Sunday. We will then travel down Italy to Naples returning to end up in Trieste. Most maps route us through Verona on our way south but we will likely hit Verona on our way north. We would like to travel into Switzerland on our way south. Any suggestions for a good and scenic day route? Thanks

Using viamichelin.com or Google.com, use the stopover function to enter a location in Switzerland. Try Brig.

On Easter Sunday, if you get off the main autoroutes (the "freeway"), you may be unpleasantly surprised to find that many gas stations are closed for Easter. More so that here. So, if you get off the high speed autoroutes, don't let the gas tank get too low.

Hohenschwangau to the Cinque Terre in one day? I'm not positive, but that sounds like a very long day of driving. With the exception of the Brenner Pass, driving through the Alps is much slower than it looks on a map. But you'll hit some magnificent scenery no matter which route you take.

The quickest route would be south from Innsbruck through Bolzano and Trento to Verona. A much longer route that includes Switzerland would be to head west to the Bodensee, then turn south at Bregenz towards Lugano and Milan. But I emphasize, this is a VERY long day of driving, possibly even too much for one day. Another route, slightly less long, would take you immediately south from Fuessen, in the direction of St. Anton, then through St-Moritz to Lake Como.

My suggestion would either be to take the direct freeway route from Innsbruck to Verona, or else add a stop along the way.

Just a reminder to purchase the vignette sticker if you do elect to travel Switzerland. Also, Austria if you travel their autobahn.
