Driving, Italy into Slovenia

It seems it is necessary to aquire some kind of stamp/visa in order to be legal driving from Italy into Slovenia for 3-4 days. Can someone tell me where, how or how much this would be. Leaving in October. Thanks, Barbara

I don't exactly what are you talking about. (1) the vignette, a small sticker you need to drive foreign-plated cars in Slovenia, which can be bought in stations near the border or at the border. I don't remember the price, but it is not much, and rather simple (you peel off and stick on the windshield) (2) authorization from the car rental company to take your vehicle to Eastern Europe with proper insurance (which is managed entirely by the rental company).

No special permission is required from the car company. Slovenia is an EU member and is considered a safe country to drive into. To drive into Croatia next door, however, requires a special stamp (but it's not a big deal). But to drive on Slovenia's highways requires a sticker ("vignette") in the upper-left corner of the window. It is their way of defraying the cost of roads while not requiring tolls. A 1-week vignette is 15 Euros and can (and must) be purchased at the first gas station you see after the border. Don't wait until you need gas. We did this drive three months ago and frankly, I just forgot about the vignette. We were on the motorway in Slovenia for no more that five miles when we exited to take another road. There was an officer checking cars at the bottom of the ramp and he waved us over. 150 Euro fine + a stern talking to + we still had to go get the vignette. I was pretty ticked off, but it was my own fault. I just forgot about it, and the roadway warnings were not in English, so it didn't register in my brain while I was distracted with driving and directions. Don't make the same mistake. But otherwise, the drive is easy and Slovenia is a beautiful country well worth the visit. Enjoy.

Randy, Many car rental agencies do not allow your car to be taken into Slovenia. Regardless of they being "legal" on its roads. If you take your car there and get in any sort of trouble, your rental contract will be voided and you are out of luck for any insurance/waiver...
