Never having been to Verona, how would it be driving in the city and outlying areas? Any problems you would foresee? If we have a car do we want to stay outside the city or would it be ok driving inside?.....We would be coming from the Dolomites and then after Verona go on to Varenna. Any problems there? Thank you!
It's Italy so it's still bad but nowhere near as bad as further south. The drive through the Dolomites is phenomenal, you'll love it.
Hey guys, we got to Verona today. The driving in the historical center has traffic restrictions. Where we are staying, a little outside of the city center but close enough to walk, seems to be okay for driving. Will you have a GPS? Driving in Varenna shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure that where you stay has parking.
Sounds like it will be better to stay outside the city limits with a car. I was actually thinking it would be fun to stay inside the city walls near the colosseum. I wonder if we should try to train through Northern Italy rather than have a car? Still trying to figure out the whole trip!... Hope you are having a blast Andrea!
We are having a great time! I can't believe our 3 weeks in Italy are over...it seems like we just arrived! We have to leave in about 30 minutes to catch our train to Munich. The apartment we are staying in here in Verona is in the city center, just not in the heart of the ZTL zones. We walked everywhere yesterday. The arena is only 5 minutes or so from the apartment! We are in an area that cars are allowed, and there seems to be ample parking. One thing we observed yesterday in two different areas - they cordoned off two different parking lots, and then began ticketing and then towing the vehicles parked there. In one big lot they seemed to ticket the same cars several times, then they were loaded onto the tow trucks. Anyway, I don't think you will have problems with a car here, and it would be handy for your daytrips.
Andrea, you spoke about the ticketing and towing from car parks.... did you notice if the car parks were signposted for a market or event; or did it seem pretty random?
There may have been signs, but I couldn't read them as they were in Italian. I was looking from above at the lot that they towed many cars from. The other lot was just motorcycles/scooters. My suggestion before leaving a car somewhere would be to make sure you know what the signs say. Multiple tow trucks showed up at the same time. One small car was picked up (they hooked something onto all 4 tires), and put on a truck!
