Driving in Salzburg

Hi,
How easy is it to drive in Salzburg? I think I read in RS book (don't have it handy right now) that there is a part that is a traffic free zone? I am lookining into renting a car through Gemut and I would need to pick up the car downtown. Anyone use Gemut and what was your experiance?

Thanks for your help,
Wendy

I have used Gemut twice and was very pleased both times.

As far as driving in Salzburg - yes, there are traffic-free zones but that shouldn't be a concern as far as picking up the car. Salzburg is not an easy city to drive in as the roads are narrow with many traffic lights. Get the car on your last day and get out of the city.

Also, I would highly recommend a GPS - an absolute life saver!

Thanks Steve,

We are staying outside of Salzburg and thought of renting a car for a few days to see sights outside of Salzburg then returning the car the moring of our last day in Salzburg see the sights, then to Munich for our overnight before our flight home.

Salzburg isn't any different than driving in any older U.S. city. Think of driving in older parts of Milwaukee.

Yes there are some narrow roads, but you probably won't spend much time on the relatively few narrow roads. There are a lot of traffic lights too but it's really not too bad. The biggest hardship, like any city, is lack of parking, you will have to pay to park in a public parking lot.

The traffic free zone is easy to avoid. Picking up downtown probably means the modern downtown area rather than the old center - where the traffic free zone is.

It’s been a few years and things may have changed, but I found that you cannot drive directly into the center because of the access control arms across the streets leading into the old part of town. There are public parking (pay) facilities right outside of the center, however, so it’s easy to park and walk in. As mentioned already, driving outside of the center isn’t especially difficult.

The couple of times that I drove in Salzburg was not difficult. Public parking close enough to the sites without walking far. I have used Gemut a number of times. Great people to do business with and they will get you good rates.
