Driving In France

We will be driving from Tours to the Loire Valley to Bayeux and dropping the car in Caen. Do we need simply the standard French driving map like RS sells or the big heavy Atlas of France should we buy either now so we can plan a bit before we hit the ground or ttry to find maps when we land. However when we land we leave at once on a train to Tours so we will not have a lot of time to find maps if we need to search out a store. thanks

I'd get the relevant Michelin regional maps, but you could arguably get by with something less comprehensive, especially if you are only using the car to drive between these destinations.

Michelin maps are available at many large or specialty bookstores in the states.

I also rely on my trusty Michelin map book. The advantage of using this is that you can see the overall big picture to plan your routes. Disadvantage- if your itinerary requires any city driving at all, even smaller cities, the maps may not be adequate. A GPS comes in handy in these situations.

If you choose regional maps, the ones you want are Michelin 513 Normandie, Michelin 517 Pays de la Loire, and Michelin 518 Centre. See here: http://tinyurl.com/5f6equ.

lee,

I've driven in France in the area you mentioned, and even with a good Map it can be a bit "challenging" in the more rural areas. I got lost a couple of times, but always managed to find my destination.

These days I always travel with both a GPS unit (one equipped with Euro Maps) and a good paper Map. I've found the Michelin series to be great, but you might need both the driving Maps as well as the city version. You should be able to find these at Travel Stores or larger book stores (Chapters or whatever).

I'd suggest buying the Maps before you depart. As you said, you won't have a lot of time once you land and might not easily be able to find a store that carries these. The rental firm will probably supply a "basic" Map.

Good luck and happy travels!
