driving in Foggia and Campania

I will be travelling in October 2014 to Southern Italy to do some geneology research in Faeto and Bagnoli Irpino after doing some research in Arce, outside of Rome. I know public transportation should be fine in the Rome area; but I'm not sure about transportation in Faeto and Bagnoli Irpino. Is public transportation available in these areas? Would it be a good idea to rent a car? How do I go about that? What is the cost?

I'm sure you'll want a car for those towns. Caserta rail station has a few direct trains from Rome and is an option for car pick up when booking at AutoEurope.com.

There are several sites that compare car rental fees, I don't use them so can't recommend one, but note the dropoff hours.
