Driving from Venice to the Dolomites

My husband and I are thinking about driving from Venice to the Dolomites in September. What is the best route to take and how long would it take us? We also thought about taking the train and just renting a car in the Dolomites. Any suggestions? We are staying at Hotel Cavallino.

Thank you, Leigh Ann

It's about a beautiful 2-1/2 drive from Venice to Cortina d'Ampezzo. You can see the route and using maps.google.com.

You'll miss the scenery and neat stopping places along the way if you don't drive.

Car rental cost probably won't go up for the fractional day (depending on when you get rid of it) and the gas cost is way less than a train ticket.

I still recommend driving, but make sure you consider tolls in the calculation, in addition to gas. (We drove from the Dolomites to Venice and then from Venice to Germany). As an example, the toll from Venice back to the Austrian border was well over 20 Euros. I don't think you will save on a partial days' rental, especially not combining with the train.

We were in a different part of the Dolomites (by Brunico), and we stopped in Bolzano and then passed through Verona. Until we got to Bolzano, we took a surface road (at first on accident and then decided to continue) that ran parallel to the Autostrada. It was a lovely little drive, and we stopped to get fresh fruit from a merchant in a truck on the side of the road. What a memory!

Hi Leigh Ann,

What town in the Dolomites are you staying in? We've been many times and if I knew where you were staying (and where you were heading to afterwards), I may be able to help.
