My husband and I would like to drive from Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovnia. Google maps says it takes 4 hours and 45 minutes, but I am curious as to how accurate this is... and how possible it is? I worry about road conditions and safety of this drive? We will be there in September.
You might want to check out the route on www.viamichelin.com It has more useful info, I think. I just looked up Plitvice to Sarajevo and Viamichelin shows 5:18 driving time. Their estimates are often "optimistic", so expect it to take a bit longer. Overall, road conditions should be fine. We were pleasantly surprised--most of that area is just like driving in Austria. Roads are in good condition and have the usual facilities and markings. Road signs are different than in the US, of course, but similar to the rest of Europe.
thanks for the suggestion and information, Angela! We've driven in many other parts of Europe, so that's good to know!
Road conditions are fine. You will drive through areas that advertise that going beyond a fence means there is the possibility of land mines, but that's not an issue for drivers, just hikers who can't read. Other than that, there's no other safety issue. The roads are 2 lane in BiH, no big freeways or anything, and the area is hilly/mountainous, but the scenery is gorgeous and the people are very friendly. You'll pass through villages, feel free to stop and get a burek, the people in BiH were very friendly and nice.
