Driving from Innsbruck to Salzburg

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best route from Innsbruck to Salzburg? We are going in October and looking for the best way.

Hi Vicki, There's a couple of ways we liked: Take either the B171 (local road) or A12 (highway) from Innsbruck to Worgl and then take the B178 heading towards St. Johan in Tirol and then Lofer. This becomes the B12 as you cross into Germany. At Schneizlreuth take the B305 towards Ramsau/Berchtesgaden. The B305 becomes the B160 as you cross back into Austria. Follow to Salzburg. Allow about 2.5 to 3 hours........ If you're up for some extra driving, Take the A22/B171 to the Zillertal exit (road B169). At Zell am Ziller, head towards Gerlos and the Gerlos Pass to Mittersill. Then the B168 to Zell am See. Then the B311 towards Saafelden to Lofer and then follow the directions from the above route. We've done both in mid/late October. Both are nice and scenic drives. Paul

Be sure your car has a "Vignette" if driving highways (such as the A12) in Austria. You can buy them at gas stations, convenience stores, etc. It's a "toll sticker" and is required for driving Austria's highways. It costs about 8 Euro for a sticker good for 10 days, which is the cheapest/shortest time sticker available. You'll see signs advertising them. Simply stick onto on the windshield. Paul

I used Via Micelin's route from Salzburg to Innsbruck. I don't recall the exact route but I'm sure it was the most direct rather than most scenic.
