Driving from Fussen, Germany to Garmisch, Germany thru Austria

In a couple of weeks we will be driving from Fussen, Germany to Garmisch, Germany and the shortest route is thru Austria. However on one map that I'm looking at shows a "(key required)" to enter 187 from Ruette, Austria. Does anyone know that that means?

Reutte is a walled city and there is a gate, which requires a key to get in. You can purchase a key from ETBD in Edmonds. Just kidding. I have no idea, unless they mean you need a vignette sticker to drive in Austria (but that is not a "key"). Is it an old map? It might be pre-Schengen and they mean you would need a pass port to get back into Germany on 187. You might consider taking the road through Germany to Garmisch via Oberammergau. (No key needed).

It is a current Yahoo map. We wanted to explore Austria a bit and it is much shorter distance, but about the same time.

I'm not sure what that means. You need a vignette sticker to drive on the Austrian autobahn network, but that's a secondary road, and no sticker is needed. There's no special check on the road.

What I've always said is, both for Switzerland and Austria, is that a Vignette is required for driving on autobahns and other roads signed as such even if they are only single lane. No matter how short the trip on those roads. The flip side of that is if the driver sticks to country lanes, including the road in and out of the country, no vignette will be required. What do I do, every time? Buy the Vignettes.

We drove the exact route two weeks ago. 187 is the number of the road from Garmisch to Lermoos (as soon as you're on Austrian soil) or in your case the route from Lermoos towards Garmisch passing Ehrwald (the Austrian cable car to Mt. Zugspitze, cheaper than the Bavarian one). The drive is very easy and scenic.

As previous posters mentioned, better to be safe than sorrybuy the vignette. There are no other rental car requirements. It's a breathtaking drive through the Zugspitze Arena where Lermoos is located. It is one of my favorite small towns in Austria. While in Austria, fill up the car with gas. It's a lot less expensive than in Germany. Have a great trip!

You won't touch the freeway in Austria on that route so you don't need a toll sticker. I didn't have one either. Other than that at the moment gas is cheaper in Austria and Diesel is slightly cheaper in Garmisch than it is in Austria. Generally speaking Diesel cars get a much better mileage....

Hi Marilyn, We buy the Austrian "Vignette" (toll sticker) anytime we're in Austria. For 8 Euro, it's peace of mind in case we either wind up on a road that requires it or decide to get on a highway. Large fine if caught on a highway without it. By the way, if the weather's clear on your drive, you may want to stop for an hour or 2 and take the cable car from Ehrwald, Austria up to the top of the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak). You'll pretty much be going right by anyway. www.zugspitze.at Paul
