We will be driving from Chamonix to Villefranche and viamichelin shows the quickest route is to go through Italy. I was wondering if there is anything to be aware of if we go that route? For example I know if we go into Switzerland we need a highway pass. Are there any pitfalls to dipping into Italy just for a few hours?
Many thanks for your help.
I just checked viamichelin and the route it recommends is entirely through France. Crossing into and out of Italy would involve winding mountain passes. There's no problem driving that way, but Italy does require that you have an International Driving Permit which is a translation of your drivers license. They're available at the CAA for a minimal cost.
Thanks, but when I look at viamichelin it gives me a route that is only 4:43 journey time of 458 kms through Italy with 3:54 of that on motorways (416 kms). This route is through Italy. We will have the IDP.
Hi Andrea. the Italy route makes sense. fyi the route to Italy from Chamonix is thru the Mont blanc tunnel. it will save you a lot of time but there is a toll - you can check online - believe it is about $40? Enjoy your trip!
I think we must be talking about different Villefranches. I was checking for Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Hi Doug I am refering to Villefranche-sur-mer. Viamichelin's recommended route is through Italy. Thanks
Andrea
Wow. You're getting much shorter time estimates than I am. I'm assuming the recommended route is through Turin? Having driven much of this area, although not the exact route, I'm very surprised by the time estimate you're getting. I think this is at least 6 hours. No need to debate, though. It's a perfectly reasonable route and you know about the IDPs, so going through Italy represents no new issues, which was your original question, just different cuisine at the Autostrade rest stops.
