Driving France to Switzerland and Germany

Family of 4 plan to rent car in Paris and drive to Lucerne and other points - then into Germany. Any idea where is the best place to pick up a car in Paris. I am guessing Orly Airport since it is south of Paris. Has anyone rented car from train station(Gare du Nord) and driven out of Paris? I figure I will be safer renting from airport. Any suggestions are appreciated

Assuming you're arriving by air, pick it up at arrival ariport. No sense flying into CDG, making way to Orly, then getting car. Too much time lost in changing modes of transportation. Same would be true for train stations.

Anticipate a second-country drop fee (perhaps hefty) when dropping in Germany. It's often less expensive to spend bucks for another day to get the car back to orig country.
Munich to Paris, for example, can be done in a really mean one-day drive.

Driving out of Paris is not hard, but can be time consuming.

Leaving CDG and heading south, you won't go into Paris, just skirt along the beltway for a short while. Piece of cake.

Will be in Paris near Gare du Nord train station. Thought it might be better to get car there rather than take train or metro out to Orly. JUst scared of driving in city from train station.

No sweat. Head north to Peripherique (beltway) and circle around east side.
