I am driving from Amsterdam to Lausanne, straight through. Googlemaps shows 2 routes, one through France and the other through Germany. Times are the same. Any advice?
When I go to Italy (via Basel, Switzerland), I go via Luxemburg, to take advantage of cheaper gasoline/diesel prices. But I am leaving from Brussels and do not have to cope with the notoriously heavy traffic on the ring roads around Antwerp and Brussels. Going via Germany, investigate the roadworks (ADAC has a good route planner on https://maps.adac.de/) as there are always a lot on German motorways.
France has big tolls on its autoroutes, Germany does not. Either case, you will need a Swiss vignette costing 40 CHF when you get to the border.
Going through Luxembourg and France involves some long 2-lane road sections between Épinal and the Swiss border. It is pretty but it can be slower than what Google says. Tolls should be minimal.
Conversely, I have never driven on the German A61 or A5, but I assume that if you pick the right day and if roadworks are not too bad, some sections could be quicker than Google's estimate, given the lack of speed limits outside roadworks and major urban/junction areas.

I have done the A5 many times.
I am not sure that conclusion is often accurate. It always has issues. Always. Speed up and shortly there will be a hard stop or at least slow right down. It gets its fair share of accidents too,
The French autoroute through Lorraine and then Alsace has its own problems but it is often less frantic and yet has similar running times.
I don't much enjoy entering Basel from France because of the tunnels, but the queues at the German/Swiss border can sometimes add additional time.
The autoroute in Alsace has no tolls south of Strasbourg (and the old autoroute past Strasbourg also has none, the new bypass does), so Luxembourg - Metz - Bâle (Basel) isn't too expensive.
Kate - does Googlemaps show you the estimated expense of the journeys ? (In terms of fuel and tolls). If not, that is handy information that Via Michelin shows in its route planner. Available either on its website or via the app.
Thanks all.
I was asking for my daughter. She took the route through Germany. All went well. Of course it took longer than Googlemaps said it would. The most time consuming hold up was at the German/Swiss border.
Her other obstacle was at Sixt, the rental car agency. They didn't actually have the van she has reserved. A very Seinfeld moment. " You can't just take the reservation. You have to hold the reservation". Just as she was about to accept a very inferior second choice, the chosen van arrived.
She did obtain a vignette sticker in advance of her trip. She knew about that from a friend...who did not and was fined.
