Driver over 75 years of age

My husband and I are planning a trip to either Portugal or France in 2018. We usually rent a car (through Auto Europe) for part of our European travels. I noticed that there seems to be an age limit in renting a car - 75 years of age. I am 76, in good physical and mental health. Will we be able to rent a car? How strict are these rules? I called Auto Europe and they told me "no problem". Several well-traveled friends tell me I won't be able to rent. Thank you. Sonya

When we checked, it seemed to vaey by rental car company and country. Autoeurope must know which agency to give you that aren't age restrictive.

I have found the the same - depends on rental agency - hubby is 77.

Rental Car Country Min./Max. Age Allowed
Rental Car Age Requirements

Franc
18 / None

Car rental age in France is at minimum 18, but some suppliers may set their minimum at 21-23. There are no maximum age limits, but extra fees for young drivers in France are very expensive and are anywhere from €30 - €40 per day.

Portugal 18 / 80
Portugal rental car age restrictions will incur an additional charge of €6 - €10 per day for most drivers under 22, and in some cases, under 24. Some suppliers may also have a maximum age limit of 80 years old.

Just to consider- public transportation can be a great option at any age. I only use public transport in Europe and it works quite well.
