Sicily is one of the most appealing destinations in Europe but public transportation is limited and driving a rental car through a maze of narrow streets requires a level of expertise and patience that few visitors can muster. Plus, there is the issue of security: it's unwise to leave a car containing baggage unattended. For a recent tour of the island I asked Francesca Lombardo, a 20 year veteran, to drive my friend and I on a meticulously planned itinerary. She and her associate in Catania were able find every address and make our visit a constant delight. Besides which, Francesca is an expert guide and knows all the best restaurants and viewing points.
