I am considering driving from Prague to Katowice, Poland (aim is to visit Auschwitz). Sleep in Katowice, next day visit Auschwitz, following day return to Czech Republic for other sightseeing. Any advice and/or caveats, re: road conditions, etc.
Road conditions are OK. But first: unless you are visiting somebody in Katowice, skip it. Coal mining industrial town not worth tourist interest. Instead go to nearby Krakow certainly worth tourist interest. You can visit easily Auschwitz from Krakow. Second: I would go to Krakow by train. Much cheaper and easier. If you feel you need a car for country sightseeing in the C.R. then on your way back get off train in Ostrava, C.R. and rent a car there.
