Has anyone used Silver Fleet or some other transport company for Dover to Heathrow? They advertise their shuttle costs approx. $90 one way. Oceania's transfer is $288/per person Dover to Heathrow. We disembark Oceania a.m. July 24. As our (Heathrow) Delta flight leaves at 9:40 a.m., we decided to spend the night of the 24th at Comfort Hotel Heathrow (actually in Hayes, a short bus drive away). Lots of mixed reviews of the hotel, but we don't feel like spending $$$$ for one night. In any event, from the airport, we'll take the Hoppa bus which costs approx $12 round trip to/from hotel.
Alternatively, would love to hire a driver/guide to see the sights, if any, between Dover and the hotel. We already visited Dover Castle in the '90s (well worth a visit). Any suggestions?
Between Dover and Heathrow places we like are Chartwell (Winston Churchill's home), the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley (the corner of the M25 and the A3), and Leeds Castle.
We loved Leeds and Wisley, as Nigel mentions - also Ightham Mote - smaller but quite nice.
Sharon has a good suggestion in Ightham Mote - they have a nice indoor/outdoor restaurant too. We often stop there for lunch on the way back from France.
We enjoyed Bodiam Castle (lovely ruin), Battle Abbey (not sure how close that is to Dover), and Ightham Mote. If you do decide to visit Igtham Mote, you might enjoy reading Green Darkness by Anna Seton.
Canterbury???
Thanks for the suggestions. We've already visited Canterbury. In fact, we've decided just to go direct to the cruise ship with Silverfleet shuttle as a private driver costs far too much money. As it turns out, since Heathrow is actually visible from our hotel, the shutte will drop us off at the hotel itself for $181.90 for the 2 of us.
