We are traveling from London to Paris on a Sunday in July and the Eurostar fares are already very high. We are considering traveling via the ferry. Has anyone done this and have any feedback?
Only about a gazillion people, there wasn't a train for a long time, you know. And some of us have never been in the tunnel. It takes about an hour and a half and costs about sixty bucks. You have to use P&O since SeaFrance and Norfolk no longer take foot pax. It's a hike from Dover Priory to the ferry terminal, there's a bus, but I just walk. Somebody else will know how it works. To me it beats the tunnel hands-down, but obviously can't compare - - at least you have a view and fresh air. Skip the boat grub, bring whatever you want to eat. On the French side, it's another hike (but I've seen buses). To make it as short as possible, head straight to the water to the west of the ship and hug it until you get to a walkway across the tidal gate, then angle to the south side of town (the ferry terminal's on the east) for the train station. The walk through Calais passes some pretty good places to eat - - espcially for cold-water shellfish.
Like Ed, my first many trips were by ferry. Pleasant enough experience (never had weather bad enough to cause problems). Not a big deal I havent done it for a while, but the train used to get you within easy walking distance of the ferry.
What Ed said - good info. You will need the train from London, or wherever, to Dover, and the train from Calais to Paris. Time is money.
We did this the other direction in June, 2008, although we still had our French rental car until we got to Calais ferry port. It was a very interesting experience and you get to see the white cliffs of Dover, but I think it will take you most of a day. I doubt if you will want to walk from Dover Priory to the Dover ferry port. It's over a mile. We used a cab, but the impression we got was that the route was heavily trafficked with large smelly trucks (oops, lorries!). And you would probably be towing some luggage.
Laura. have you thought about the Eurolines Bus?
Would the Eurolines Bus be from Calais to Paris?
The Eurolines bus starts in London (Victoria Coach station) and goes to Paris, ending at a huge bus terminus the name of which I have forgotten but it starts with a "G", on the outskirts of the city, very close to a metro station.
When I lived in London and my girlfriend lived in Paris this was a regular trip for me. I got it down to about 8 or 9 hours each way. Train to Dover - boat to Calais - bus to train station (it would be a looooong walk) - train to Paris. Never tried the bus. My shoulders are wider than 14 inches ... I hate bus travel. They take about the same time as my best runs.

Trains to/from Dover are not cheap either.
