Does anyone know what's going on with the new Berlin airport???

I am scheduled to fly out of the new Berlin airport (BER) on June 16th. However, I hear that it may not be ready yet. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/08/uk-germany-airport-berlin-idUSLNE84701620120508 Will my flight (United Airlines, to Munich, then to Newark) be automatically transferred to the other airport? Are the airlines ready to the delayed opening? I would appreciate any info or updates. Vielen Dank.

Oh, gosh! I wish I knew, too. We have tickets from the new Berlin airport to Amsterdam (then SEA) on July 1 so we have the same problem. All of the press indicates it will definitely not be opening on time: August at the earliest. The airlines are furious. I have contacted my travel agent (yes, I still use one for int'l travel), and he is looking into it. He predicted they will continue to fly out of Tegel, but I'm waiting to hear back. I will post here again when I have more definitive details.

Is your Berlin to Munich leg operated by Lufthansa? If so, there is a post on the Lufthansa site indicating that they will continue to fly out of Tegel and are looking to secure additional slots for their new flights. I have a similar situation ... fly out of Berlin on June 3rd to Zurich to IAD on Swiss/United with the ticket bought through United. Neither Swiss nor United have any updates posted yet, but the Swiss flight the week prior goes out of Tegel. I'm assuming that my flight will go and am not going to worry about it until June 2nd :)

The Willy Brandt airport fiasco (the actual problem is not construction, but a fire safety system not properly implemented and thus not approved on tests) means airlines will keep flying to Berlin's other two airports. That will be an inconvenience for passengers with destination Berlin, but flights should keep using the current Texel airport and the Schönefeld old terminals as well.

My flight was booked through United (actually through CheapAir.com) but the United flight is operated through Lufthansa.

According to Morgenpost the opening day will be March 17, 2013, although 1 week later is another possibility. Flights will in general appear as cancelled with passengers transferred to a new flight to one of the current Berlin airports. Some airlines are contacting people, others expect you to find out yourself.
