Do you like to travel on Austrian Air and Lufthansa?

I am looking for tickets (late May to late June) departing from anywhere in the NE United States into Vienna and returning out of Venice. Right now, the best price I'm seeing is departing from/returning to Toronto, where there is a non-stop Toronto to Vienna on Austrian Air and a return flight on Lufthansa (with a 2 hour 20 minute layover in Frankfurt). I have never flown either of these airlines and would love to hear what you think of them.

There is also a nonstop return from Venice to Toronto on Air Canada Rogue, but after reading the scathing reviews I'm thinking stopping in Frankfurt might be worth it if the experience is that much better on Lufthansa. Thanks!

Flew roundtrip on Lufthansa LAX - CDG in October in Premium Economy. Overall very satisfied with the airline. Staff was professional and friendly and flight was comfortable. Food wasn't fabulous - but then airline food typically isn't and food on the return flight was definitely better.
Would fly them again in a heartbeat since I won't fly Air France!

We have flown Lufthansa many times, for many years. In fact we just booked with Lufthansa for next July to Poland.

I've had good experience on Lufthansa, including on TWO-segment flights to NYC or Newark NJ from places other than their Germany hubs. Their oversea flights are more comfortable than United, our usual EWR carrier. In many cases, the second (Euro) segment adds less than $100 to a round-trip to the German hub city. Some people find Frankfurt too big, but many airport are huge. The key is whether there are later flights in case of strikes, delays, and so forth not of your making. A big airport is better for that.

We haven't flown Austrian in 20 years, but it was fine. I particularly liked the view from the smaller jet that went from Vienna to Innsbruck, with fine (even, scary) mountain views. We flew to Innsbruck via Vienna and home from Vienna.

When you come down to it, most posters here care only about the price. In your case, access from Ithaca makes a big difference. Presumably you are a US citizen.

Haven't flown Austrian Air. But I've flown on both Lufthansa (several times) and Rouge. Lufthansa is fine. Not the best, but more comfortable than a lot of American carriers. Service on the flights was good and the food was edible, which is the most I expect from an economy seat. Avoid Rouge if at all possible. I only fly it if I have no other choice.

I have flown many times on Lufthansa, including within Europe and from Europe to North America. Overall, my experiences have been positive, except for one poor flight from Frankfurt to North America. I am flying them again in May for several legs of a trip.

I always fly Lufthansa in preference to US airlines if I can. I feel the service on Lufthansa is definitely better.

Four years ago, for our first trip to Europe together, my partner and I flew over on Lufthansa and back on United (that was all I could get with United miles). She said she could tell the difference; Lufthansa was much better.

Last fall we flew both ways on Lufthansa; Lufthansa has a non-stop flight from Denver. I think it might have cost more, but I didn't even compare costs to United. I just knew I didn't want to fly them.

I have flown on Lufthansa many times, both international and domestic flights. It is an excellent airline, a member of Sky Alliance along with United and Air Canada. I know nothing about Austrian Air but would choose Lufthansa over them based on my experience flying with them.

Glad to hear positive reviews of Lufthansa. Has anyone flown Austrian Air? I love the idea of flying nonstop to Vienna, and the price is good....but I don’t want to book without knowing anything about the airline (the flight is a codeshare with Air Canada but Austrian Air appears to be the carrier).
Thanks!

You can find good and bad reviews on just about every airline. All of the intangibles and unpredictables that can make a flight good or bad can happen on any airline. That being said, I would always choose Lufthansa if all other factors (schedule, price, etc.) were equal. We flew Austrian from Vienna to Dulles in 2014 - no issues or complaints.

OP, you can get a few reviews about Austrian (specific to the aircraft and the flight experience) by plugging the flight number into seatguru's seat map feature.

We flew Austrian Air from Vienna to Toronto in 2014 and were pleased with our flight and service. As others have said, you're going to get the odd flight on any airlines that you won't be pleased with, but on average they're pretty competent.

We traveled in Slovenia and on to Vienna with my sister and her husband last September. They flew Austrian into and back from Vienna and liked it. It helped that they won their bid for an upgrade to business class on the return.

We flew Austrian , Fall of 2016 , Vienna to JFK ( non-stop ) . Comfortable flight which was comparable to Air France traveling from Europe to NYC. .

I fly Austrian all the time, as do thousands each day. My favorite European airline, with excellent in-flight personalized entertainment system and good food (and wine).

Hi,

Never flew Austrian Air. The last time I flew Lufthansa was in 2016, SFO to FRA, r/t. It was all right, nothing special.

Austrian Airlines is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. I've flown both and have no issues whatsoever with either. I flew Austrian 2 years ago to/from Vienna and was quite pleased.

We flew Austrian Air from Miami to Vienna a couple years ago. It was fine. I would say it is a bit more budget like. It was direct and the price was good.

I would do it again.

Austrian Airlines is not remotely like a budget airline.
