SIXT is the worst company ever. Not just rental car but of all companies. Buyer beware. I have sent countless complaints and they haven't replied to none. Here are the issues I had: 1. although I had my own car insurance got suckered into buying theirs which doubled my rate. 2. Had a rental that had a maintenance minder which completely shut it down because it was a diesel. The van was towed I payed for a taxi to get to my hotel. The next day they gave me a van but did not reimburse my taxi ride and btw they charged me for not having a full tank on the car that broke down. Emails sent to hq, actual rental agency, and their customer service email. Not one reply back. In fact they now put me on their list to get advertisements like this on fb. Until they acknowledge me and refund every penny back I will keep telling my story. Don't make the same mistake I did. I have rented vehicles all over Europe with other companies and never had these types of issues. Atrocious customer service! Beware fellow Americans as this is disgraceful and makes American customer service untouchable.
"...got suckered into buying theirs which doubled my rate."
As far as the insurance goes, they are a sales organization; if you agree to buy they will be happy to sell it to you. Why didn't you refuse it?
This sounds a lot like my experience with the Sixt group in Rome a couple of years ago-it never got resolved with Sixt, however, it was so blatant the amex refunded all their charges on my card. On the other hand, never had an issue with their locations in France or Germany.
Sounds like a bad experience; sorry it happened to you. But I wouldn't generalize your one experience to all of Sixt. I rented from Sixt in Zurich and had a very positive experience.
Touche! Woinparis
I feel bad for anyone who has a bad experience with a business or service and I don't begrudge them the right to post their experience as a notice to others. But I resent anyone telling me NOT to use a particular business or supplier of a service based on their single experience. Directing that admonition to Americans and stating unilaterally that American customer service is 'untouchable' (read: better) seems a bit ethnocentric to me.
Don't miss the point...Of course not every business will have the best customer service 100% of the time (unless you are in Japan). Anyone can have an off day. Got it. But it's how you deal with adversity and in this case customer service complaints. You can scan the web and see similar complaints regarding SIXT and how they don't even acknowledge them. These are examples of multiple complaints per dissatisfied customer. Not exactly a coincidence or a just a one-time occurrence by the company. This is not just another p-off customer letting out on the web. My family travels a lot and I sure do read reviews on Google, Yelp and other sources. If everything is rosy on the reviews I would assume the company is great. That's why reviews need to elaborate both good and bad experiences. You the customer need to decide from there. To suggest you are offended by a scalding review is naive. That is typically all you have to make a good decision. Of course not every SIXT rental agency has poor service. Some management teams may be outstanding. But SIXT is a large global company that should define basic customer service principles for each of its rental lots. It is basic Business 101. Therefore each bad experience a salesperson elicits represents the brand on his/her shirt. Do you think Disney would accept multiple blunders per employee and park? Take it for what it's worth. You may not agree with the statement that it is geared toward Americans but it is a simple way of letting them know that they are in a foreign country or continent for that matter, and little chance for rebuke. Bottom Line: There is no way you should consider renting from SIXT, especially SIXT Zadar Airport because you have a great chance of being disappointed. This is the kind of review you need to read because it is only this review that will give you a chance to make an educated choice about renting from SIXT or any other company that is available to you. Sometimes you need to call the baby ugly to allow for a company to grow and improve. BTW this is a Rick Steves forum. I have lived in Europe for many years. It is wonderful. Croatia was one of my favorite places to visit. I could talk about it non-stop and tell you of the great experience my family had. This review in no way shuns the Croatian people, culture and country alike. This review describes the practices of a terrible company with terrible customer service that could be in any country in the world. Simply is a buyer beware review. If I read t his review I would have had great trepidation about engaging with them. You make the call....
Zadar is in Croatia. It's the ancient Dalmatian capital (Zara).
