Do I need to reserve a train from Prague to Vienna? Advice Please.

Hello!
I am arriving in Prague on 8/8/08 and will be departing on 8/12 to Vienna. Do you think I should reserve in advance from the Eurail website (I'd prefer not to) or can I just make the reservation when I get to Prague on 8/8? I'm worried about the train booking up, I really have no idea how fast they fill? Any advice appreciated! : )

According to the IDOS site they do not state you will need a seat reservation.

There is a direct train (no changes) departing Praha Holesovice station @ 10:23 and arriving Vienna (Wien)Sudbahnhof station @ 14:28.

Another direct train departing Praha Holesovice station @ 13:33 and arriving Vienna Sudbahnhof station @ 18:03.

Scroll down page....right hand side for English translation.

Hope this helps.

There are many trains per day but those two are the most direct trains.

I didn't know about that website-but it will be very helpful. Thanks for your reply!

Hi Gloria,
I took the train from Prague to Vienna last year and no reservations were required. Get to the station at least 30 minutes before your train's departure time.
The train was full and there was not a lot of space for luggage unless you were traveling with a backpack which might fit in the overhead rack. But they are not fussy so you can have your cases anywhere there is a space (within reason).
We used a rail pass but one of my friends who did the same just got point to point tickets a fews days before without any problems. We traveled in July. Good luck!

It's usually quite easy to get point-to-point tickets right before departure without any problems. My two trips to Europe I haven't booked any trains ahead of time (except Eurostar) and have been fine.

Since August is the vacation month for most of Europe, you may want to make reservations in advance. The other responders here do no say which month they traveled without reservations.

Since your travel dates are August, I would not chance it. I would reserve.

I just took this trip two weeks ago. No problem with room in the train; I got reservations at the station whyen I arrived, but sure didn't need them. It's a long trip, take some food along.
