Do I need a rail pass???

Our transportation needs will be the following:
Rome to Venice
Venice to Florence
Florence to Monterosso
Monterosso to Avignon (area touring, probably with group)
Avignon to Barcelona (This is available for me to book but want to know if the cost becomes less if I hold a pass and if I will actually find the pass worth the expense)
Barcelona to Madrid
Madrid to Seville

This is something you need to analyze in detail and will depend on some things like if you are willing to go 2nd class with P2P tickets, buy PREMS in advance, or travel on slower trains to save money.

I don't think the pass will pay off in Italy. Often, the surcharge for riding EuroStar trains with a pass can be almost as much as P2P tickets.

It kind of looks like a pass could pay for the Monterosso to Seville part, that's only four days worth, and the Eurail pass is 5 days @ $80/day. You might consider a France-Spain 4 day, 2nd class pass ($293) instead.

We are first-timers in Italy-seniors re: rail pass or not? What kind do we buy? First Class necessary we leave Venice want to rail to rome then rail to Sorrento, then back to Rome then back to Florence and fly home this is all in 12 day period- is the train our best bet? should we buy in usa or buy as we go? We have hotel dates set- want to go smoothly between hotels
anything u found out would be helpful tnx

The following should give you a guide:

Rome to Venice - Std Fare 56.10Euro
Venice to Florence - Std Fare 36.10Euro
Florence to Monterosso - Std Fare 17.30Euro
Monterosso to Ventemiglia (border) 23Euro

Each time you use your railpass for a Eurostar, it will cost you 18Euro. The first two runs above are mostly Eurostars. Most likely, there will be no supplemental charge on the Florence to Monterosso run but there could be on the last run depending on which run you choose out of Monterosso.
