Deutsche Bahn's instructions state that I should print my train tickets on A4 size paper. Can I get away with printing my them on 8 1/2 x 11 paper? I hate to buy an entire ream of A4 just to print two pages. Appreciate your input and feedback!
On our trip to AMS today, just gave it to the attendant and there was no problem with the 8.5 x11 I printed it on. You do need the cc with you that the ticket was purchased with.
I printed mine on 8½x11 and it wasn't a problem. I also made A4 by cutting down 11x17 and set the printer for A4. I took the file with me to Germany and had my first host print it on his printer. All three were slightly different sizes and proportion, but I don't think it matters. The conductor scans the "bar code" with a hand scanner, and what the scanner "sees" depends on how far away it is and at what angle. I had all three versions with me on the train and gave the conductor the 8½x11 one and it wasn't a problem.
No, paper is paper. We printed all of our tickets last winter on standard US paper.
You just have to override the type of paper that your printer defaults to. So when you go to print, your printer is probably set to Automatically select paper type. Just change to letter.
The one thing you need to not do though is change the size, as in "shrink to fit" the paper, or enlarge it. This changes the bar code and is probably why some people have had problems with the paper. They have changed the print-out to fit the paper, and then the bar-code can't be read by the train personnel.
