We are flying into Rome airport with United Air...after we leave the airport we would like to take a train to our Hotel Aphrodite on the Via Marsala which is across from the Termini. How far do we have to walk after getting our luggage and getting to the train stop at the airport ....time & distance approx????
Also would there be vans/shuttles available curbside and what would it cost for 4 adults from the airport to the Hotel Aphrodite?
For four people it would be cheaper and more convenient to use a taxi - 48E fixed to anywhere in central Rome. The Leonard Express is 14E/person or 56E for the four of you. Assume you are coming direct from the US, you need to go through immigrations - depending on time and number of planes coming in it could take an hour or more to get through immigrations. Once clear of immigration probably another 20 minutes to the train station plus time to pick up luggage and to go through customs. The train station is attached to the terminal so it is hard to judge walking distance so am guess at a quarter to half mile but it is well marked.
Dee, You might find it helpful to have a look at the excellent Ron In Rome website: www.roninrome.com/transportation/to-from-leonardo-da-vinci-airport-fco I normally use the Leonardo Express as I travel solo much of the time. The trip is about 35 minutes and that's constant since it's not affected by traffic. If you do decide to use the Leonardo Express, you can buy tickets either from a staffed ticket office (€15 PP) or from the Kiosks (€14 PP). DON'T FORGET to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train, or you'll face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! Getting to Hotel Aphrodite will be extremely easy if you take the train. With the tracks at your back, walk out the right side doors of Termini (you'll walk past the Roadhouse Grill) and you'll be at Via Marsala. Turn right and walk one block and the hotel will be on your left. There's a large sign outside, so you can't miss it. As Frank mentioned, the time to reach the rail station at FCO will vary according to how busy Passport control is at the time, how long it takes you to retrieve your luggage, etc. IMO, I prefer the Leonardo Express over a Taxi, as the travel time is somewhat definite as it's not affected by traffic. Happy travels!
Here is a schematic map of the airport: http://www.adr.it/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=c26a391a-6c35-41c4-acae-19df4b2b50fd&groupId=10157 The distance to the train station, which also serves shuttle vans, depends on the terminal building where you arrive, but none is a great distance. The train station is the white tube with stripes. You will probably ride an escalator or two.
The train reception hall is cluttered with competing ticket-sellers, including the operator's own outlets plus travel agents and even newstand venders. If there is a line-up for the train agent and you choose an native, you will probably face a sales pitch for a shuttle because the train is late/busy/etc. I was groggy after the flight and did not resist, which put me in a van travelling to Termini through roads clogged with morning traffic. It was okay; it stopped at Termini anyhow. But next time I think I'll ride the train, probably faster and more comfortable.
