Discount Eurail + Eurail Info

My son is attending college in Prague this semester and wants to do 2 trips: First one will be about 7 days to Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm returning to Prague. Second one from Prague south to Austria (probably Vienna and Salzburg), Florence, Rome, Venice, Nice or Monte Carlo area, then back thru Switzerland and Germany to Prague over about 10 days.

Questions:
1. Anyplace or anyway to get discount Eurail passes?
2. They need global passes, probably for 15 days over a 60 day period (traveling in March and April 2010) Should they go first class?----we've not heard great things about the 2nd class Youth---is it safe to sleep on the trains in 1st or 2nd class?
3. How do you read the schedules....they are all very difficult, or am I looking at a European version? In trying to plan how many days of travel, need to see how long it takes to get between cities and the schedules seem impossible.
4. Lastly, if you are traveling, for instance, from Salzburg to Venice and were on a late evening train out of Salzburg and had a train connection in Munich and the train from Munich to Venice left after midnight, does that count as 2 train days. Where are the rules that govern how the days are counted?

Any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks for the help!

"... Salzburg to Venice and were on a late evening train out of Salzburg and had a train connection in Munich and the train from Munich to Venice left after midnight ..."

This is a moot question, because the night train connection from Munich to Venice leaves before midnight. There are day trains from Munich to Venice, but they leave after 7 AM.

However, according to the "7 PM rule", if you board a night train after 7 PM, as long as you are on that train until at least 4 AM, you can enter on your rail pass the date the train arrives at it's destination. However, trains getting you to your after-7-AM night train are not included. You would need to use two days.
