Disabled parking while traveling in Great Britain and Ireland

We are planning a 2 month trip to BG and Ireland this fall and the Rick Steves books are invaluable in planning our trip. I have recently had knee surgery and find it difficult to walk great distances (yes, I know there will be walking wherever I go). I have a disabled parking permit here in the states, but I'm assuming it will not be good for travel abroad. How do I obtain a disabled parking permit for our trip. We are renting our own vehicle and driving ourselves. Thank you for your help.

In both the UK and Ireland, each country recognizes placards from other EU states, but not from outside the EU. In the UK it is fuzzy, it is recommended that you contact local authorities to determine if you can use your placard, in Ireland, placards are handled by independent organizations (Irish Wheelchair Association). I think it would be difficult and mainly time consuming to get a placard for a temporary disability, if even possible. Since you will not be alone, the answer will be dropping you off while the "healthy" driver finds a parking spot.

not sure on Ireland but you can use it in Britain just remember to display it clearly when you leave your vehicle and don't park on double yellow lines or you will get a ticket. Disabled bays are also clearly marked and have bigger spaces. hope this helps
