Directly from Trieste to Slovenia?

Though the Rick Steves Croatia & Slovenia 2007 book has two maps which give the appearence of direct train travel from Trieste, Italy into Slovenia (the first set of facing pages with colour map of area and page 19) I cannot find direct train service. Rail Europe takes you through Udine and Villach a rather circuitious route for 7 hours of travel to reach Ljubljana rather than going directly into Slovenia for 100 kilometers.

The Slovenia train web site is not much better, showing a 3 hour circuitous route (which included a bus tranfer between stations) to go from Trieste to Divaca which appears to be about 25 km.

So are there really trains which go directly from Trieste into Slovenia as the maps would appear to indicate or not?
Our real goal is to go from Trieste to Rijeka, Croatia. I have found trains from Divaca, Slovenia to Pivka, Slovenia then on to Rijeka in a timely manner, but nothing to get us from Trieste to Divaca.
Has anyone traveled this route before and could offer us some pointers.
Thanks so much

Jeff, Thanks, yes I had seen that one as well, but was still hoping for something a little more direct / less time. Thanks again
