Are there any airlines that flight direct to Florence from London (any airport)? Flying with a tranfer seems to eat up the whole day.
Vueling starts flying LHR to FLR in the spring
Cityjet flies LCY to FLR Try searching on kayak.com. Use the code "LON" for London. You can also click on the checkbox "add nearby airports" if you want to also see flights into Pisa and Bologna.
As you may be discovering, not many airlines make the London/Florence run directly. One that might, depending on the day, is www.vueling.com. Vueling is a nice Spanish budget airline that normally would like to take you to Barcelona first but I do see a direct non-stop 3.0hr flight from Heathrow to Florence. I'm just not sure if this is a daily flight. You might have much better luck flying into Pisa and taking the 1.0hr-1hr15min train ride into Florence. Next choice would be London/Milan or London/Bologna and again taking the train ride into Florence. This ride is a bit longer and more expensive since its on a high-speed. Florence is not a large airport.
We flew into Pisa from Gatwick on EasyJet and took the train over to Florence. Pisa is a larger airport than Florence.
Currently there is a daily from London City with AirFrance (operated by their regional Cityjet). There was a daily from London Gatwick with Meridiana Fly but I don't see it in today's departures, not sure if still active. Vueling from Heathrow will start on March 30. Easyjet or Ryanair to Pisa is another option. British also has a daily to Pisa from Heathrow. London to Bologna is another possibility. There is a bus that connects Bologna airport to Florence downtown (fortezza da basso) every 30 min or so. Florence airport is shunned by many airlines due to the short runway. The construction of the new runway project is planned to be approved this year but obviously won't be ready for a few years. And that assumes Pisa's politicians and NIMBYs near the airport don't try to stop it (as they have done for almost 50 years). Can you imagine Spokane's politicians stopping airport expansion at Sea-Tac for fear of competition for Spokane airport? That's what has been going on in Tuscany for decades between Pisa and Florence.
A few years ago we took a flight in reverse-Florence to London on Meridiana. I think we flew into LGW or LHR-not Stanstead.
Thank you all--this is super helpful. I didn't know Pisa's airport was the bigger one, so I'll look at that as well.
Angie, use Whichbudget.com to find many of the lo-cost airlines that ply the EU. We have had great success using these. Also pay close attention to the airports that they fly in and out of. Some can be miles away from everything else. They all have very tight restrictions on weight and size of luggage, and most limit you to one carry on; not a purse and another item, but one item PERIOD! Again, we have had great sucess using these airlines; you just have to read their terms, etc.
