I have diabetes, pack syringes in carryons, and have sailed through security in US & Europe. But the Alitalia web site mentions a 4 syringe limit accompanied by a four page signed document!!! I plan to simply carry several in my pocket, assuming I won't be scanned. Have any diabetics had experience with Alitalia?
I've never flown Alitalia but I wouldn't take the chance. If they should check you, and find it, they can refuse to fly you.
I've never heard of such strict rules. If you can, fly a different airline.
I looked at the medical certificate and it doesn't mention anything about diabetes. Why don't you call the airline and ask.
I would not sneak in with syringes - not only could you have major issues if discovered, since the needle is usually metal, you might well set off the alarm. Additionally, you have to take off any coats or bulky outer garments, so it would be hard to have a pocket large enough for a syringe.
Airlines are not out to get people with valid medical conditions. Four syringes plus any testing kits and insulin should be enough to get you to/from Europe.
It sounds like you just need to let them know when you are booking and have your doctor fill out a form. Makes sense to me, as they can make sure your needs are met ahead of time. You should have a full prescription from your physician for the syringes and insulin anyway in case you lose your stuff or it gets damaged and for purposes of customs in Italy.
FYI, I'd agree on the comment about finding another airline. Alitalia has NOT had a good rep recently.
