We will be in Southern Burgundy for close to three months this fall, and would like to do a lot of touring. We have a GPS, but would also like to have a detailed map of the region. Which would be the best to purchase?
We travel a lot in Burgundy and also take our own GPS with markers for some places we stay and places that are photogenic, but we have found the best 2 maps we have in addition are a map of the whole of France and, more importantly, a regional map of just Burgundy that we purchased in Avallon, France. It has places not listed in the many maps we have taken over the years. So , if you do not find any specific one here, look there.I will try to find the maker of ours...but we definitely bought it in Burgundy.
I got detailed maps for biking in Burgundy from omnimap.com
If this is about biking, I suggest the IGN 1:100000 series. These are excellent topo maps that show a great deal of detail. If this is about motor touring, I don't think you can beat the Michelin maps either the 1:200000 or the 1:150000 series. They are very good maps integrated into the excellent Michelin guide books. No matter what sort of electronic GPS stuff, I would certainly want good maps along too.
If you have an electronic gizmo like an iPhone, iPod, iPad and similar, there is an app called CityMaps2Go. It is cheap or maybe even free. It allows you to download maps of cities and regions and stores them in your device so you don't need wifi or a phone signal to access a map once downloaded. The maps come with extensive interactive info.
