I am travelling by train from Nice to the Cinque Terre on a Tuesday morning. I would like to hop off twice - at San Remo and at Santa Margherita Ligure. I don't believe either has a bag deposit to leave bags while sightseeing. What do you suggest is the best place to leave one bag while wandering?
Cris, If there's no Deposito Bagagli in either location, the only choices would seem to be: > Haul your kit around with you when you're touring San Remo and Santa Margherita. > Forget the two stops and go directly to the Cinque Terre. One option you might consider would be to visit Santa Margherita Ligure (and perhaps Portofino) as a day trip from the Cinque Terre. It's an easy trip and doesn't really take that long. Which of the five towns are you staying in? You'll only be able to "hop off twice" if using a Railpass and Regionale trains. If the train has compulsory reservations, you'll need valid reservations for each segment. Travelling without reservations in Italy on trains where they're compulsory will result in a nasty surprise in the form of a hefty fine for each infraction which will collected on the spot! Happy travels!
There are Regionale trains that go directly from Ventimiglia to the Cinque Terre with stops in San Remo and S. Margherita Ligure. I think that if you buy a ticket for a Regionale train from Ventimiglia to the CT town of your choice, you will be able to get off at both San Remo and S. Margherita Ligure without having to buy more tickets. However, I believe that you must begin your final leg within six hours of departure on your first one. (Important disclaimer: I'm basing this on things I've read, not on personal experience.) If you want to play it safe and not worry about the time limit (whatever it is), simply buy individual tickets for each leg. Tickets on Regionale trains are cheap. Don't forget to validate each ticket in a box at the stations.
