delta carryon restrictions

According to Delta's website, flights with 50 seats or less (mine has 50) do not allow carry-on bags due to limited overhead space. All carry-on bags will be gate checked during the boarding process and returned upon deplaning. Has anyone flown a Delta connection flight and found this rule enforced? I mean, what are the overhead bins there for? I have 40 minutes from landing in Detroit to catch my connection to Amsterdam and don't want to worry about wasting valuable time collecting my bag. Thanks.

It depends how small that plane is - yes, if it's a 2 seat on one side and 1 seat on the other type of plane and you almost bump your head on the ceiling walking through, there really is no space for anything other than a gym bag in the overhead compartments. Those overhead bins are pretty much useless.

I have had this occur many times on small flights. They simply give you a tag to put on your bag at the gate. Tear off the stub with the matching number. They take the bags down the steps on the jet way and when you arrive, they will bring them back to the jet way. I did have to go to the baggage claim once, however, I believe it was the end flight. They are generally very quick getting the bags up to be picked up. There will be many people waiting. The overhead bin space in these small planes will not fit many or the carryon rollers.

Thanks Agnes...do you forsee a problem with getting my bag quickly upon deplaning? Am I standing on the tarmac while they unload? This is my first carry-on only trip and don't want anything to go wrong.

Well, I'm not a fortune teller - you'll be at the mercy of how fast the baggage handlers unload the bags and bring them to the gate where everyone will be waiting. I would guess they unload them as last in, first out..but who knows their process? I don't remember it taking longer than 10 min and sometimes less. Have your supercharged running sneakers on ready to run to the next gate to get on the very big plane

If your junk is gate-checked, it's just tossed in the belly at the gate or at the aircraft door. You don't go to baggage claim to get it back. It's being unloaded before the door opens and it's waiting for you at the airplane end of the jetway when you step off. Rarely, it's up by the gate. Double check what airframe Delta Connection / Endeavor is actually using for your flight. Bombardier has two varients on the Albany-Detroit route - - only the CRJ-200 has less than fifty seats. EDIT: Am I missing something, or are you guessing: Standing on the tarmac at Detroit??? That ain't an airport that uses chicken coops for a terminal.

I have flown the Delta commuter lines of small planes and it is rigidly enforced because the overhead bins on the small planes are like the glove box in a car. You might get a jacket and a notebook computer in but that is it. Good luck.

You could just check it through to Amsterdam. I believe Delta gives you one bag for free on an international flight. I know that probably the point is to skip baggage claim at Schipol, but in this case you would be assured your bag would make it with you and no stress over picking it up after the first leg.
