We are headed off to New Zealand from the US in February. Flights from our home US airport are crazy crazy high for the class we wanted to fly and the schedule we desired. We had a one ticket Delta Itinerary we really liked but again it was out of our price range. It involved 3 connections. For yucks, i broke out the individual legs and by doing that was able save substantially on that same itinerary. So, now we have 3 separate tickets we will be flying on. I understand some of the risks that presents if connections are missed etc.. but not sure its any more risky that other positioning flights we have done using different airlines just this time it on the same airline and more tickets. . It makes me a little queasy as if we miss our last leg from LA to Auckland we are hosed. Anyway, my question and this is specific to Delta, anyone have any experience asking Delta to check bags thru to your final destination traveling on separate tickets. I didn't see anything on Delta site specifically but regardless was interested in actual experience. Thanks a bunch.
Obviously, I would not go to a kiosk to print the bag tags. Get to the airport
early enough to talk to a full-service agent, not someone at the bag check area
who checks ID's and puts the bags on the belt.
After that, it probably depends on the mood the agent is in, and if you have
status, etc. The agent will need to look at your docs, confirm the flights on
his/her screen, and check for things like entry requirements for each leg, etc.
I am confused. Are all tickets on Delta? If so, I think you have a shot. They might even be able to "link" your tickets. Still 3 reservations but I have linked separate Delta reservations with my husband for one segment that we would be traveling together.
I was lucky once when they checked my bag through final destination with one segment on a partner airline and separate ticket.
Thanks for the replies! and Joy, yes, three tickets all on Delta...
Use the website chat function and see if they can link the reservations for you. If not, then go to first airport early and show them reservations to see if it can be ticked through. Good luck!
This can be done no problem... I do it quite often as I often find a deal out of New York and fly using miles to there.
You will need to check in at the counter not with a skycap. Just have all reservations available, if the agent says "no" ask for a supervisor but I've never had to do that (just read about it).
Delta will also "protect" you if there are issues with their flights so if there is a problem call them and work with them. And when you call you will be offered the chat option, trust me - Whatever you do, do NOT use chat. If there's a problem with any of your flights CALL! Chat will lie and/or screw up your flights (Trust me, been there, done that, spent over 4 hours on the phone to clean up the chat mess) I know Joy means well but trust me as someone who is a VERY experienced Delta frequent flyer and reads a lot of horror stories... do NOT use chat unless you want your reservation screwed up or to be lied to... (Before I quit using them the first two times I tried the flat out told me lies, sad that I know more about DL then their chat agents and then they "got confused" and cancelled my flight by accident)
Carol, my experience has been the opposite. We've had issues and getting things messed up when we called. But one never knows until it happens, unfortunately. My husband was Diamond 2 years ago and they somehow messed up his itinerary when the original flight was canceled (he was going back home from South America with 2 connections). He called and got seat on new flight, just to find out the agent on phone forgot to book him on the connection too. It was a mess but he made it.
Delta's website for travel agents has the airline's "Through-Checked Baggage Policy." Here is the url: https://pro.delta.com/content/agency/us/en/products-and-services/baggage/delta-s-through-check-baggage-policy-.html
It very specifically states that baggage on two tickets for Delta-marketed, Delta-operated flights (sold by Delta, flown on Delta metal) will be checked through to the final destination and seems to indicate that that will work for three tickets for Delta-marketed, Delta-operated flights, too: "...when more than one ticket is presented, Delta will continue to through-check baggage from the origin to the destination... [for]... An entire journey (itinerary) consisting of Delta-marketed / Delta-operated flights."
I have had zero trouble checking a bag through to the final destination on 2 tickets for Delta-marketed, Delta-operated flights; I've never tried it for three. I've also had zero trouble checking a bag through to the final destination on 1 Delta-marketed, Delta-operated ticket + one partner ticket mentioned in the policy.
My buddy Chuck? He checked through a bag recently on two Delta tickets. One was his local airport to JFK on Delta; the second was a Delta-purchased ticket for a KLM flight from JFK to Amsterdam. For whatever reason, his bag did not get loaded at JFK and arrived at Amsterdam 3-4 days later. But he has bad luck with checked baggage.
Just a caution due to booking many months ahead- it's very likely at least one of your three departure times will change. I use Delta's app and have always been notified but twice have had my chosen departure time/connection time significantly changed.
That could create a domino effect for you, but I hope not! I now keep a packing cube with a change of at least underwear, shower shoes and old sleep t in my personal item and I don't check a bag. But in your case, either you or your suitcase could arrive separately. I also put my first night's destination lodging on the luggage tag.
Safe travels!
If they agree to check your bag all the way, look at the tag they put on the bag (Not really a tag but a sticker). Make sure your final airport is on it.
Personally, I would also get some type of air tag to put in the bag so you can track it even though Delta, supposedly, keeps track of the bag.
Alrighty, so I'm encouraged with all the feedback and your suggestions are very much appreciated. I will come back to this post in March and let you know how it went! Take Care
Air tag is a good idea. That's how my buddy Chuck kept track of where his bag was. KLM was not always aware of where it was, and he told them where it was,
Hi dootle,
It is possible for the ticket agent to check them all the way through if they are all on Delta (or even a Delta Partner). However, it is up to the agent's discretion. It sometimes works for me and sometimes does not. Do you have enough time during your layovers to recheck your bag then go through security again?
Actually, as the link someone posted shows it’s not at the agent’s discretion. they’re supposed to do this. That discretion is I don’t feel like doing it or I don’t know how to do it. I would suggest if they say they can’t do it that you ask them to get a supervisor to assist you.
Now that said where I have problems with this is coming home from Europe. But of course I last flew home on one ticket from Paris to Boston to Atlanta and the Air France agent told me she couldn’t check my luggage to Atlanta. Luckily it doesn’t make any difference because you have to pick up your luggage and go through customs in Boston anyway so I took it to the Delta agent who looked at my ticket and said why isn’t it ticketed to Atlanta and I said Air France claims they couldn’t do that she just rolled her eyes and laughed.
KimberlySEA, that is an backup and we do have enough time to check/security as our connection times sit right now.
We'll also look at packing for carry on as well as an option. But its our preference to check so thanks for the feedback.
