Dealing with Flight Delays and Cancellations

The Associated Press has published an article on how to deal with flight delays and cancellations during the government shutdown

https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-travel-delays-canceled-flights-38bd3f9d066b064b5f2aa248864fe13b?u

A few takeaways:

--If your flight is canceled by the airline, you are entitled to a full refund for all costs including seats and baggage. You can insist on getting an actual refund and do not have to accept a voucher. Even if the flight is nonrefundable.

--as the shutdown looms longer and longer, expect more and more delays and cancellations;

--unlike in the EU, if you are delayed or rebooked by the airline, they don't have to pay for lodging, food, extra costs. Biden introduced a bill to do this, Trump killed it. The airlines applauded;

--if your flight is canceled, try first to get rebooked online, then the phone. If you are a member of the airline's FF program, call that line. If already at the airport, get online and wait your turn. (I also try calling while watiing in line to see who I can deal with first.)

--treat the people trying to help you with respect. They didn't cancel your flight.

Last night we got word that our flight this morning was canceled. Both my husband and I tried calling and were on hold for over an hour when finally we got word that they had rebooked us. Not ideal as it’s a red eye but at least we will get jome

If you’re at the airport and have lounge access then that’s also an option. I’ve found airline lounge staff often are very knowledgeable and perhaps have greater autonomy to get passengers to their destinations.

@mikliz97, do you have your airline's app? I pretty much only fly Delta, and I have my app. Often, I can see that my flight was changed/cancelled/rebooked/altered on the app before I even get an email. Also, the app will show if you are rebooked and the new flight details.

This morning Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, if the U.S. government shutdown continues, by next week “you’ll see be mass delays. You’ll see mass cancellations” of flights throughout the U.S.

He also said the “closure of some U.S. airspace” may be necessary as more Air Traffic Controllers do not show up for work.

Air Traffic Controllers have not received paychecks since October 14.

Thanksgiving is 23 days from today.

Kenko, correct me if I'm wrong, but this will not be good for travelers.

AXIOS: NEW: US could see closed airspace, "mass chaos" next week if
shutdown doesn't end, Duffy warns.

Happy travels.

David, I agree with you it won’t be good for travelers.
Hopefully, a compromise can soon be reached so people can visit their families during Thanksgiving and people can eat.

Have the apps for all your airlines you will be flying on your trip.
Bookmark a couple of hotels near airports you may get delayed out of, then you’ll have quick access to places to stay if need be.
Always carry a change of clothes, extra meds and some toiletries in your hand luggage, just in case.

Download the EU Passenger’s Rights info to have it to hand for trips into and out of the EU.

Biden introduced a bill to do this, Trump killed it.

The president can’t introduce bills. Biden was using regulation (rulemaking) powers to do this.

The president can’t introduce bills.

Technically, no. The President can't personally introduce a bill. However, he can draft legislation and have it in "introduced" by a member of Congress.

The same goes for "killing a bill." A President can't techinically do that either but has it done by members of his party.

Right, but he was using the rulemaking process which goes straight to law. Congress had already authorized the administration to write the regulations, at least that was Biden’s take.

Being pedantic, but I had a lot of work experience with federal regulations (rules). Statutes provide the framework but it’s regulations that make up the majority of federal laws.

We had looked at traveling later this month, but decided to focus on other things. I would have thought myself crazy for thinking a shutdown could last a month, certainly not two, but it appears that it very well could. The party in charge has little interest in ending it, so it will likely go on.

I will second "Rockets" advice above, if you find yourself stuck, and have lounge access, they have worked miracles for me, and no long lines or waits on hold.

Jules—yes we have the app, but there was no word on there except that our flight was cancelled. It was finally rebooked about 90 minutes after we got the notice. We made it home, and the red eye was not ideal, but we made it!

At times like this I sometimes look forward to the Panglossian best-of-all-possible-worlds posts from some who like to see the glass as half-full (or rather the 90%-will-be-fully-staffed-as-normal point of view.)  Also, I remember everywhere is within walking distance if you have enough time!

Happy travels!
