living in the US I have added DB Navigator to my Iphone. its an awesome app.
but... does anyone know? ....does it "stand alone" or require an internet connection to use? I dont want to pay the internet connection fees. help soon!
Easy enough to figure out. Use it and see if the phone shows connection activity as you move from page to page.
If you already have the DB Navigator on you phone, can't you just turn off the Internet connection and see if it still works. I have no idea about the size of the database required or the memory capacity of the iPhone, but my instinct tells me that the app is getting it's information from an Internet connection. Since the Bahn and other rail companies change their schedule every six months, a program that stores the data internally would not be valid after that time. However, a few years ago, I purchased from the Bahn a CD with all of the current schedules, not just for Germany, but for all of Europe. It works offline, but is only accurate until they change schedules. You can purchase it here for €9,90 plus €2,40 shipping. The website is in German; last I checked there was not an English version of the page. It works on Windows (XP, Vista, and 7, only), so it would be great for someone who travels with a netbook. I only glanced at the page, but it looks like there is also a download. Ops, since this is a travel website, I assumed DB Navigator was a travel app and DB stands for Deutsche Bahn. But after looking up DB Navigator on Google, it looks like DB stands for database and it is just a general database reader. OTOH, DB does have a download for an app called DB Navigator. Is that what you mean? The Deutsche Bahn Navigator allows you to order tickets and has realtime information. Those functions would require an Internet connection.
Up date: I just downloaded the schedule program (not Navigator) from German Rail. It's great. Works just like the program I got earlier on CD, except the download is free - no need to order by mail. The program stores in 383 MB. It runs on XP, but didn't ask me the Op Sys, so I assume it is only for Windows. It has a function to goes out and looks for the latest schedules. That would require an Internet connection, but the rest of the time it works offline.
Lee, the bumf says its for XP, Vista and Windows 7. BTW - The first 2 of my Menu Masters arrived today - Italian and French. They look really great. The Italian one was updated just a few years ago. I'm so glad you suggested to get the German one, and I went off piste to get the French and Italian ones as I am there so often. The German one is still on the way. Expectation and excitement build and build...
Michael, I also have DB Navigator on my iPhone and before that on my iPod Touch. I've used it on previous trips in Wi-Fi areas for route planning and checking schedules and changes, and found that it's an extremely useful travel App! I'll be using it with an iPhone for my next trip. It's is an "official" product from Deutsches Bahn AG, as they're listed as the source for support. Unfortunately, the information they list on the App Store is all in German, so I couldn't read of it. However, as you've noted the App itself operates in English. To get to your original question, DB Navigator DOES require an Internet connection for full functionality, either via Wi-Fi or 3G. In my experience, it's possible to search a route and leave that displayed on the iPhone for use off-line, but using the route planner or other functions requires a connection to the DB website. This would also apply to ticket purchases. I haven't tried all the functions yet, but that's my assessment so far. I'm not familiar with the Windows XP / Vista / 7 version that others have referred to in this Thread. One question - which iPhone are you using and with which network? It may not function in Europe, except in Wi-Fi areas. Happy travels!
Thanks, Guys! Already downloaded...
If you like the DB Navigator check out the Fahrplan app ;-)
Andreas, Which Fahrplan app are you referring to? There are several of them. Is the same information not available on the DB Navigator app? Cheers!
The one with the H in a circle as icon (looking like a regular German bus or tram stop).
@Andreas, Thanks, I'll have a look at it. I wonder if it provides anything different than the DB Navigator app.?
