We know that there is a direct night train from Geneva to Barcelona but is there a convenient way to go by train between theses two cities during the day? How long would it take? It's impossible to get this information from the Eurail site.
The paper Thomas Cook timetable suggests a daytime itinerary of TGV 6818: 1242 Geneva - 1510 Valence TGV 6213: 1622 Valence - 1940 Figueres
EI 212: 1956 Figueres - 2145 Barcelona This is late into Barcelona but the morning fast connection from France into Barcelona is too early to connect from Geneva. Slower trips leaving earlier are probably possible using the traditional non-high-speed line along the coast: try looking online on bahn.de or tgv-europe.com for separate services between Geneva and Lyon, Lyon and Portbou (will need changes), and bahn.de or RENFE for Portbou and Barcelona. Or you could fly, or split it into two legs staying overnight somewhere near the French coast like Montpellier or Perpignan.
Very helpful Phillip. Thanks.
If you follow Philip's suggestion and check bahn.de, you'll find that you can leave Geneva as early as 07:29; connect in Lyon, Montpellier, and Port Bou; and arrive at Barcelona Sants at 18:39. Or you can fly non-stop on easyJet. Depending upon the day of the week, easyJet has either three or four flights/day. Booked well in advance, fares can be as low as 27.95 CHF (around $30 US).
