I would like to travel from Rome to Monte Cassino and Subiaco for the day. They are in different directions from Rome, but if I could hire a private tour person I think it is doable. Does anyone have suggestions or hints about how to do this? I will be in Rome in October. Thanks.
Hi Kim! Did you ever do this day trip ? I want to do it also in early July '08. Any tips ? Bus routes ?
Yes, I did go from Rome to Subiaco last October. I took the subway from Termini to Ponte Mammolo. Then I took a bus to Subiaco. When I got to Subiaco, I was told by the tourist office (I didn't find one person in the town who spoke English!) that the monastery was way out of town and the only way to reach it was on a bus that left the center of town at 2 pm. Also, the monastery is closed from 12-3, so I had a 3 hour wait. I took the bus at 2 pm up the road to the monastery; was dropped off on a road and had to walk about 25 minutes straight up hill to reach the monastery. There is no bus to take you down the hill; you will have to walk back to Subiaco. My advice is to rent a car; there just isn't an easy way to reach the monastery from the town and there is no way back down the hill except to walk. If I had known this, I would not have gone. I did find a sympathetic monk who drove me back to town, but I think he did that because I am a Benedictine nun and I was crying! Good luck!
