Day trips, extreme

I've posted about this before, not necessarily advocating but FYI. You really can fly very cheaply once in Europe and take a small vacation from your vacation. Not great for the environment.

Huh. I guess that packing light goes without saying.

The title of this thread initially made me think it was about going somewhere nearby for bungee-jumping, paragliding, or maybe guzzling a lot of Mountain Dew. But anything and anywhere for just part of a day via plane, then back home, is pretty extreme. I guess this how some of the people who own private jets, with hired pilots and maybe other staff, go about life.

An extreme Extreme itinerary would be flying to Berlin for breakfast, Ljubljana for lunch, Monaco for afternoon tea, Paris for dinner, Brussels for dessert, then home. Airport security for every flight in one day? That would be extreme.

For the day? I won't judge, but the shortest door to door will be maybe 4 hours and I suspect 5 or 6 is more realistic. Thats a hard day.

But, for an overnight? Sure, why not, if it interests you.

We all get to travel the way we choose. It's not my thing though. For me it's not always about the destination, its about the journey. I've always enjoyed my flights to Europe, but once there it's trains and ferries. On the train I get to see and feel the journey, watch the change in the countryside, and note the landmarks. I lose that sense seated in a metal tube.

I live in Europe, so an overnulight that takes 5 or 6 hours each way isn't a big deal. But it's a different concept if you are just visiting.

Thanks for sharing this interesting article! Recently, I read about Americans using this extreme strategy to visit Disney World. The article highlighted a young couple who were able to fly same-day roundtrip for much less than the cost of a one-night hotel stay.

Personally, I would never want to take the risk; I've had too many delayed flights. Also, my style of travel is slower. I don't like non-stop days. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I went to Vienna for a night. Just got back. But it's different wnlhen it's 3 or 4 hours door to door.
