Daughter stuck in Spiez, Switzerland due to Train Strick

My daughter was not aware of the train strick. She is a college student who is trying to return to Florence from Spiez. She is sitting in a train station with no idea of what to do. She was scheduled on the overnight Trentalia train. Is there another train or mode of transportation she can take to get back to Florence?

The strike if effecting all trains, buses and subways in Italy. It's only one day and everything should be back to normal on Tuesday.

She should go to the information desk and ask for help. Supposedly, some long distance trains in Italy are running.

Here's the news story--is it possible that she could be a bus?

Rome, Italy (CFF, Fre) - A 24-hour strike scheduled for 21:00 Sunday in Italy will affect connections between Switzerland and Italy, notably the Cisalpino trains. The CFF says buses will make connections but it recommends that passengers try to delay their trips.

faye,

I've never used Coach / Bus in that area, but I suspect that other travellers affected by the strike will have already booked every available seat.

If I were in the same position as your daughter, I'd probably try the Bus first and failing that just get a Hotel room for the night and wait for the strike to end. I'd also check back at the station on Monday to get my ticket and resevation re-booked for the first available train to Florence.

Unfortunately, that's the best suggestion I can think of at the moment.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your responses. What we did was contact the university and they advised her to get a hotel for the night and try again in the morning. So in the morning the Spiez station was pretty baron but she was able to take a Swiss train bound for Italy. Trentatalia was still on strike. Long story short, after taking three Swiss trains to get to Milan, she got on the only Eurostar train that was headed to Florence today. She is now safely back in her dorm room looking at the awesome skydiving video of herself.

Thank you for the update Faye! I'm happy that your daughter is back in Florence safe and sound--another European adventure...

faye,

It's great to hear that everything worked out. It's not surprising that conditions at the station were "barren" as the strike was probably still in progress.

Was your daughter Skydiving near Interlaken? I did some Paragliding in that area. It's a great location for activities like that.

Cheers!
