D-Ticket Question

I got the D-Ticket last December for my Christmas market trip and it worked great. I would like to get one for September (this month) but held back because of a family situation that made my trip uncertain. That situation has changed and I think we will be able to go on the trip, so I would like to buy the ticket now. Is it too late to do that?

I also wanted to clarify that we can use the D-Ticket to get between Munich and Salzburg.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I think you can still buy for the month of September but you will need to cancel by the 10th as before. I read on a recent thread that one person recommended a non MVV app that pro rated the month long ticket. Maybe you could do a search to read that very recent thread. From what I’ve read you can still use the D ticket between Munich and Salzburg but I haven’t done it myself. Take care.

Thanks to both of you. I have the MVV app and it worked very well. I’ll look for the information about a prorated ticket. We really only need it for 4-5 days, but it will save us money.

One thing to know is that while you can use the D-Ticket to get to Salzburg, you cannot use it for free public transport within the city (unlike other German cities, where it's good on S-Bahns, U-Bahns, etc.). It's not a big deal, imo, since Salzburg is pretty small, but just an FYI. :-)

If you look on different sites, they clearly indicate that some routes, including Munich-Salzburg can be done on the D-ticket. A number of border crossings are included, like Basel, Switzerland, Venlo; Netherlands, etc. I think the only restriction is that you need to be on a DB train, not one operated by another country.

If you are comfortable with the MVV app, great, but I found Tranzer, as recommended by "The Man in Seat 61" (and he provides a link) to be more user friendly. No setting up an account, US credit cards accepted, you buy for the month you want, and they cancel. You do pay a whole 2.50 EUR service charge, but well worth it for a single, simple transaction in a few minutes.

I think the only restriction is that you need to be on a DB train, not one operated by another country.

There is no such provision; if there were, you would not be able to travel to Venlo, Hengelo or Arnhem in the Netherlands, for example. The decisive factor is whether a foreign station near the border is defined as a “border tariff point”, i.e. a common border station, by state treaty.

For a complete liste of those stations, follow this link, open the FAQ "On wich trains is the DT valid" and click on the"scope of applications" pdf; then scroll down to page 8 ("Schienenverkehr außerhalb Deutschlands").

Thanks everyone. HVV Switch prorates the ticket, which is fantastic. I already had the app because I was going to use it last year. I set it to begin on the 18th and it was €21.23. I paid with PayPal. Then I tried to set it up on my husband’s phone. I downloaded the app, but when it got to be time to pay it would not accept his credit card. He doesn’t have PayPal. It seems he will either need to download it or use a different app like MVV and have to pay the entire amount. I want to save money, but frankly I have a lot of other things to deal with so if I have too much trouble I will probably just do what is the easiest.

Mardee, thanks for the reminder that it doesn’t include public transportation in Salzburg.

Success! Mona, thank you so much for letting me know about the possibility of getting a prorated ticket. I owe you a coffee or something at Panera, or even better a glass of wine at Kathrin’s.

Yay glad you could find the thread about the prorated D Ticket and successfully buy yours. We bought the tickets for the month of August this year but just used it 11 days, multiple times a day across all allowed transportation options. It was so handy to have but it would be even better if we had bought it only for our specific days. Convenience was worth it in the end. I’ll take a rain check for the glass of wine later this fall when we are both back.

You will have to cancel that subscription by the 10th to avoid being charged for October! Remember the time difference!

KGC, I had a D-Ticket last December. I got it on the MVV app and it was very easy to cancel. It think it’s going to be a little more difficult this time because none of the emails they sent provided a link for cancellation. I’m going to have to get back into the app to figure it out. I plan to do that today.

Edited to add - Never mind, I just opened the app, went to the ticket and I just have to click on Cancel Ticket.
