Czech Republic or Southern Germany?

Hi - my husband and I are going to have a week to travel after completing a river cruise from Budapest to Prague on the Danube. We are trying to decide where to spend that time, in the Czech Republic or in Southern Germany. We will have had 3 days in Prague prior to this time. We plan to rent a car, but to rent in Prague and drop in Frankfurt, from where we depart to come home, will cost an extra $500! Suggestions are welcome!! Thanks.

I'd think about going to Germany if you've already spent quite some time in Prague and on the Danube River. Instead of renting a car in Prague and incurring the extra fee you could take the train from Prague to Germany (e.g. Munich), rent a car there and drop it off in Frankfurt after exploring Southern Germany.

First of all, check to see if you can rent a car in Czech Republic and drop off in Germany.

My suggestion would be if you cannot...then take a direct train from Prague (6 hours-very inexpensive) to Munich. In the Munich main station there is a travel agency that provides day Castle tours. Well worth the tour. Aside from Switzerland, the Barvarian area of Germany was my favorite amount the 8 countries we visited.

Enjoy!

Hmmm, how do you go on a river cruise to Prague coming from Budapest? Via the Schwarzenberg Kanal?
Well, I digress. If you haven't seen CZ outside of Prague, I'd suggest considering traveling into Southern Bohemia or Moravia (Telc, Jihlava, Jindrichuv Hradec and, of course Cesky Krumlov/Krumau), either by rental car or bus. I'd take the train to Linz, and then to Munich. Then I'd rent a car, if time allows, that you can drop off in Frankfurt.

Consider using gemut.com or e-sixt.com; the former is an Oregon-based consolidator - I just rented from them after hearing glowing reports about their service. Sixt is a European outfit that rents cars at low prices.

When we were in Prague in May 2006 we used one of the drivers in the Rick Steves book. He drove us from Prague to Dresden. It cost $150 and we stopped for several hours in Terezin (incredible) and then had a great lunch with the driver in the little town just north.
