First time for internat'l travel:) Dulles to Rome (United) w/ connection in Frankfurt (Luft) and Rome back to Dulles w/connection in Frankfurt. Where will we go thru customs on outbound and return trips? We plan to carry on our bags but may have to check one bag. Many thanks!
To Rome: immigration (passport check) will be in Frankfurt, customs (the stuff you're bringing with you) will be in Rome. Any checked luggage will automatically placed on your flight to Rome. To Dulles: Immigration is again in Frankfurt, and another at Dulles.
Did not realize customs and immigration were separate-very helpful to know. So, now another question: Does one go thru security first and then customs and/or immigration or does it depend on the airport? Thanks again.
You're welcome. Depends on the airport setup. Frankfurt is a toss-up, everything depends on which part of the terminal your gate is. You may go through security before or after immigration, or no security at all which happened to me a couple of weeks ago at Frankfurt. Most security checkpoints will also want to look at your passport and compare it to your boarding pass...just like the TSA does here in the US.
Security first. In Frankfurt you should stay behind security.
