Cruising one way transatlantic from Europe, cheapest flight info

Leave from Knoxville Tennessee to Rome one way.
Then, we will be cruising home to US from Barcelona on the Allure of the Seas in Oct 2015.
What is the best strategy for purchasing airline ticket TO ROME from US.
One way is several thousand $ more than Round Trip ticket.

It is usually true that one way tickets are the most expensive, so the common strategy is to buy a roundtrip ticket and throw away the second half. Make sure that the first half is the leg that you will use; if you miss that first flight, the whole ticket could be cancelled.

You don't say where you are starting, but you can fly Chicago to Barcelona on Aerlingus for 800 one way and NY-Barcelona on Icelandic for 500+ one way in April.

Try Royal's Choice Air. They often arrange great fares for TA cruises.

Have you checked with the cruise line to see if they have a deal on the one-way airfare? I know some of them used to (of course, that's just the sort of thing that changes).

I have seen many knowledgeable travelers advise against the "book roundtrip and throw away the return flight" strategy. Not sure why, but they are adamant about it.

Besides there is no need to do that. Several airlines, like Aer Lingus and Icelandic, offer reasonable one-way fares. Or if you have miles do that---most programs allow booking one-way for half the roundtrip miles cost.

And it is likely the cruise line has access to deals on one-way flights. Ask them.

Where does your ship dock back in the US? Fort Lauderdale, right?

To save money on a roundtrip, buy an open jaw ticket: Knoxville to Rome, then Fort Lauderdale back to Knoxville. That should work with looking online or working with the cruise line or a travel agent.. I would never use the cruiseline air unless they were offering a special and you verified it yourself- and you might still not have control over the flights or connections. Sounds great-- Have fun!

You can fly from BNA (Nashville) to Rome for just over $500 most days in October. See MatrixITAsoftware.com. It's a 180 drive Knoxville-Nashville.

Then you can fly from London Gatwick to Rome FCO for between $60 and $90 on EasyJet.com.
